Looking for Alibrandi

Looking for Alibrandi, written by Melina Marchetta is a story about a teengage girl called Josephine Alibrandi experiencing her final year at St. Martha’s. Josie has to overcome racial comments, family troubles and complicated relationships. Josie falls in love with Jacob Coote, however she has strong feelings for John Barton.Without these relationships the main characters wouldn’t seem to grow, or relate to the audience. The absence of her father, Michael Andretti, allowed her mother, Christina Alibrandi, and her Nonna to be Josie’s main role models. For Josie’s whole life she never really knew her father and when she saw him for the first time at Nonna’s she freaks out and runs back home.Throughout the year she eventually accepts her ethnic background and becomes a proud Italian-Australian.

Marchetta has created characters and plot which allows the readers to connect with the book and how Josie is feeling, especially teengage girls who the book is targeting. Marchetta has also used themes of love, friendship, independence and the ability to overcome the odds which  the readers can again connect with whilst also getting caught up in the drama of Josie's life.

Students of middle/upper primary would have no worries reading "Looking for Alibrandi" as Josie would lead a similar life to this age group of students and it would be something that the students could look at more closely. I enjoyed reading "Looking for Alibrandi" and would definately use it as text for future students.
