Week 8 workshop - Running Records

This weeks workshop had a particular focus on running records. A power point was shown how running records are to be kept and the meaning behind the many processes. Firstly I did not think that such a process could be complex but found it was. Throughout the lesson a clip was shown that showed a young girl reading the book 'The Bull and the Frog' which was at level 15. As an activity we were to make a running record. The theory learnt previously helped and provided meaning for learning and grasping the idea. It was interesting that although all class members had been taught the same way there were differences in our understandings in taking running records.

Furthermore the members of my reading group had made progress with their story board and shared their story line. Aicia story line includes a little boy who visits his grandad in a nursing home. His grandad suffers from Alzheimer's. The story has a strong connection to the way the boy deals with his grandad being different to everyone else's and the journey that he takes to make sense of the disease in his own way. Ruth story line includes a boy who goes to the playground and allows his imagination run wild. Ideas such as sharks and crocodiles were mentioned as some the animals the boy would imagine whilst play on the equipment. Sarah has her story around a turtle and how he does not like where he lives. Furthermore the story will include the adventures of the turtle to find a new home where he is happy. The turtle tries lawn however it is too long, he tries a sandpit but the sand just gets in his eyes and finds himself stuck a lot of the time and finally realises there is no place like home and goes back to his tank. Tamara storyline was brief but concise it will be about the monster who has a human boy underneath his bed where the monster is afraid of the human. Finally my story line includes two girls who set out to make freshly squeezed lemonade for there weekly dinner parties with their friends. To only realise they have misplaced the recipe and search the house, it is a new character who suggest to use the internet to research.

  1. This workshop was useful to connect some of the theory behind the course into assessment and could be linked to our placement which we are undertaking this semester especially running records. The workshop was also useful to clarify up and coming assignments regarding story boards and the digital narrative.

  2. I found this workshop extremely useful as running records is something that I will be looking at throughout my placement. It was good to see how this aspect of English fits in with the theory that has been learnt throughout the course, and how we can use this to apply in our own classroom settings.
The workshop was also helpful as it allowed us to share our ideas for the narrative assignment.
